Tax Compliance Status PIN South Africa
Identify the returns, debt or registration issues affecting tax status before requesting or sharing a compliance PIN.
A Tax Compliance Status PIN lets a third party verify your standing with SARS in real time. That real-time element is the part businesses underestimate: the PIN does not certify a moment in the past, it exposes your status continuously for as long as the PIN is valid.
We establish why the status is failing, fix the underlying compliance rather than the symptom, and keep it clean between requests so a tender or funding deadline is never the moment you discover a problem.

When you need this urgently
- A tender or contract requires a compliance status and the deadline is close
- Your status has flipped to non-compliant and you do not know why
- A funder or bank has asked to verify your status
- You need a foreign investment allowance or emigration-related confirmation
- A customer has told you their verification of you failed
- Returns or payments are outstanding and a request is coming
It is a live status, not a certificate
The PIN system replaced the old printed tax clearance certificate precisely so that third parties could check the current position rather than a document issued weeks earlier. Anyone you give the PIN to can check your status for as long as it remains valid.
This means compliance has to be maintained rather than achieved once. A return that falls due and is not filed, or a payment that is missed, can change your status while a tender is still being adjudicated.
What actually makes you non-compliant
Non-compliance is usually one of a small number of causes, and the system does not always make it obvious which. Working out the real reason before trying to fix it saves a great deal of time.
- Returns outstanding across any tax type, income tax, VAT, PAYE
- Debt owing to SARS that is not under an approved arrangement
- Registration details that are incomplete or out of date
- A registered representative not correctly recorded or verified
- Registration for a tax type you should no longer be registered for
- A dispute or assessment left unresolved on the account
Different requests, different requirements
A general "good standing" confirmation, a tender request, a foreign investment allowance application and an emigration-related request are not the same thing. The last two in particular require substantially more supporting information about the source of funds and the underlying transaction.
Applying under the wrong type, or with insufficient supporting documentation, is a common reason a request stalls when time is short.
Fixing the cause, not the symptom
Where returns are outstanding, they are prepared and filed. Where a debt is owing, it is either settled or brought under an arrangement that SARS recognises. Where the profile is wrong, the registration details and representative are corrected.
Chasing the PIN without addressing the underlying issue simply produces the same result more slowly. The status is a symptom of the account, and the account is what we work on.

Where this catches businesses out
Leaving it until the tender deadline
Underlying compliance problems take time to resolve, outstanding returns have to be prepared, and payment arrangements have to be approved. A PIN request does not accelerate any of that.
Assuming it stays valid
Because verification is live, a status that was compliant when you shared the PIN can change afterwards. A return falling due mid-adjudication is enough.
Forgetting dormant registrations
A tax type you registered for years ago and stopped using still generates filing obligations. Dormant PAYE or VAT registrations are a frequent hidden cause.
The representative taxpayer is wrong
If the person recorded at SARS has left the business or was never properly verified, requests fail for reasons that have nothing to do with returns or payments.
What we usually need
- Company registration details and the current representative taxpayer
- SARS eFiling profile access or authorisation to act
- The latest statements of account across registered tax types
- Details of the request type and the deadline you are working to
- Supporting information for foreign investment or emigration requests
What usually goes with this
What to know before you begin
If your situation is not covered here, ask, the answer usually turns on facts a page cannot know.
Is a PIN the same as a printed tax-clearance certificate? +
SARS uses a Tax Compliance Status process and shareable PIN; current recipient requirements should be confirmed.
Can M&J guarantee compliant status? +
No. Status depends on the taxpayer’s actual SARS position and SARS systems.
What if tax debt exists? +
Available payment or suspension routes depend on the facts and require separate assessment.
How long is a PIN valid? +
It is issued with a validity period, during which anyone holding it can check your live status. Because the check is live, remaining compliant for the whole period matters as much as being compliant when it was issued.
Can we get a PIN with debt owing to SARS? +
Potentially, where the debt is under an approved payment arrangement or has been suspended pending a dispute. Debt simply left unpaid will fail the check.
Why did our status change without anything happening? +
Usually a return fell due, a payment allocation shifted, or an assessment was raised. The account will show the cause once the correct tax type is examined.
